Just another example of schools trying to be parents. And to Chuck: You can’t just change schools just like that. If only it were that simple. And I’d hate to think the only way to have anything done is to be on the school board. Give me a break. This is rediculous, how are we supposed to be raising adults? Next you know, The Hartford is gonna require all employees to ride public transportation to work. Good grief.
I’m on the mother’s side….. If it was all transportation by bus that would be one thing – but it’s OK to ride in a limo but not OK to be driven by a parent?? Give me a break!
Are these the same sdtudents who regularly drove themselves to school? Are they now going to be self regulating about the trivia that school admins consume themselves with? Let the mom drop them off a block from the hotel and let the conduct police run in circles!
It is a well intentioned but what I don’t understand is why a PARENT can’t drive them. I guess if you want to spend hundreds of dollars for a limo, you don’t have to take the bus – but if you want your parent to drive you, it’s against the rules??
The school boards policy is ridiculus. Their intentions are understandable, but it seems that they have intirely too much time on thier hands. Who takes a bus to the prom?!?!?!?
My first question is why is the prom in South Portland? Has the Sanford community deteriorated to the point where it can’t even provide facilities for a high school prom? (This could eliminate transportation problem). As to the regulation concerning transportation….doesn’t the school providing transportation now put them in a liability exposure?
I think instead of how these students are going to get to prom; the teachers, staff, etc. should focus on education. And better yet, what these young adults will be doing after the prom.
A simple policy that says students can’t drive to the prom would be more than enough. There is no reason to say that the “only” allowable transportation is a limo or bus. The point seems to be to avoid underage drinking and driving–but how many of these students drink at the prom? According to teens in my area, the drinking they do on prom night is at after-prom parties, not at the proms, and by then, the limos and buses are long gone anyway. And, yes, if the school forces them to ride in limos or buses, they are opening themselves to liability claims if there are accidents.
yeah i am a student at the school and i wanted my mom to bring me and my boyfriend. why parents werent allowed to bring the students is questionable but the buses werent that bad. i mean it werent he best thing but they at least got us nice buses

THIS MOTHER NEEDS TO GO WITH THE SCHOOL
PROGRAM. IF SHE DOES NOT LIKE THE PROGRAM
RUN FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD, OR CHANGE SCHOOLS.

Arent they just trying to keep the young’ns from killing each other in the cars?

If the school board requires a limo, let them pony up the cost for one. Taking a bus to the prom???? On par with taking a bus to get married.
While they have good intentions, it’s gone awry a bit (just don’t let the kids drive themselves..sheeeeeez)
