Two Pa. Areas Cited as Most Secure Places to Live by Insurer

December 7, 2006

Some Pennsylvania areas made a West Coast insurer’s list of the nation’s most secure places to live.

The Scranton/Hazleton/Wilkes-Barre area ranked sixth and the Harrisburg/Carlisle region 18th on the list compiled by Los Angeles-based Farmers Insurance Group. The company based the rankings on crime, extreme weather, job loss, terroristic threats, environmental hazards and the risk of natural disasters.

A few big cities ranked high on the list, but the study generally ranked smaller metro areas as most secure. Boise, Idaho, topped the list.

Farmers Insurance did not reveal its least secure places to live. A spokesman said only that they could be found in hurricane-prone areas along the coasts of Florida and Louisiana.
