Mass. Attorney General Martha Coakley has asked for two more auto insurers to defend their proposed 2008 rates at public hearings.
Coakley wants Arbella Insurance and Hanover Group to explain their rates for next year when the state shifts away from state-set pricing to managed competition.
Meanwhile, Insurance Commissioner Nonnie Burnes will hold her own preliminary hearing on rates filed by Commerce Insurance Co. today. Commerce said it believes its rates are in line with all the state’s requirements.
A week ago, Coakley also called for hearings involving three other insurers: Commerce, Premier, and Safety. According to Coakley, Arbella and Hanover would overcharge consumers by a combined $25 million if their rates are approved as filed.
Monday was the deadline for Coakley’s office to call hearings on the rate proposals.
