A prominent labor official has appeared as a witness before a federal grand jury that’s been investigating influence-peddling at the Rhode Island Statehouse.
George Nee, the secretary-treasurer of the Rhode Island AFL-CIO and a former director of the Beacon Mutual Insurance Company, testified Thursday before the grand jury.
His attorney, John Lynch, says Nee was appearing as a witness and was not a target of the grand jury’s investigation. He declined to discuss Nee’s testimony.
Nee served on the board of Beacon, the state’s dominant workers’ compensation insurer, until being ousted by Gov. Don Carcieri in early 2006.
A report released by state regulators last year found that officials at Beacon Mutual made politically motivated payoffs and undercharged companies connected to politicians.
The company is under new leadership.
