Housing advocates and civil rights groups in New Jersey are calling for more help for renters and greater transparency for the state’s next allocation of federal Sandy recovery funds.
Fair Share Housing Center and other groups say the state should distribute the money by county and town proportional to the amount of damage.
The groups, which include the NAACP and Latino Action Network, have questioned why there have been relatively few African-American and Latino applicants for relief programs.
New Jersey’s Community Affairs Department has defended its outreach efforts to minority communities.
The state is expected to be allocated $1.4 billion in recovery funds in coming months. The state must first issue an action plan for how it intends to use the money.
