Connecticut Regulator Warns of Phone Scams Targeting Policyholders

Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Katharine L. Wade is advising consumers to be wary of a scam in which a caller poses as a representative of an insurance company and informs people that their policy is being canceled for non-payment.

In the scam, the caller then asks for a credit card payment over the phone to reinstate the policy, the regulator warned.

The Connecticut Insurance Department said on Dec. 10 that it has become aware of at least one instance in Connecticut where this occurred.

“Fortunately the policyholder did the right thing and contacted his insurance agency which confirmed the policy was in good standing,” Wade said.

“We urge consumers to be vigilant at all times but especially around the holidays. Never give out your credit card information to an unsolicited caller,” Wade said. “If you have an agent or agency you deal with directly, contact them to verify the status of your policy or payment or call your insurance company’s customer service number.”
