Maryland Commissioner Redmer Elected Chair of NAIC Northeast Zone

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ (NAIC) Northeast Zone has elected Maryland Insurance Commissioner, Al Redmer, Jr., as its new chair.

Redmer succeeds Susan L. Donegan, the outgoing commissioner of the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation (DFR), who served as NAIC Northeast Zone chair. Donegan is stepping down from the DFR commissioner post at the end of June.

In addition to Maryland, the Northeast Zone includes Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

In his executive leadership role for the Northeast Zone, Redmer will work with his peers in contiguous states to identify the zone’s goals and priorities for the NAIC, and will represent the Northeast on the NAIC’s 17-person Executive Committee for the duration of his term as chair.

“I am excited to represent my fellow insurance commissioners as well as Maryland consumers, insurers and agents in this key leadership position with our industry association,” Redmer said.

“As we work towards standardizing the approach to insurance regulations, it is critical that we take into account the viewpoints of multiple stakeholders so that we protect the public interest, promote competitive markets and ensure the reliability and solvency of insurance institutions,” he said.

The Maryland Insurance Administration is an independent state agency charged with regulating Maryland’s $28.5 billion insurance industry.
