New York first responders rescued 22 people Saturday evening from a boat on fire in the waters near City Island in the Bronx.
The New York Fire Department (FDNY) reported that its marine unit was conducting routine patrols when it learned of the fire on a boat with 22 people aboard.
The first responders pulled three people from the water and transported them to City Island where emergency medical technicians (EMTs) were waiting to care for them.
According to FDNY, the other 19 people swam to Hart Island where they were picked up by the New York Police Department Coast Guard and FDNY boats and transported to the yacht club on City Island.
Officials said that one person was in critical condition.
ABC-TV reported that the operator of the boat was taken into custody for being potentially intoxicated.
The cause of the fire is under investigation
