California-based Heffernan Insurance Brokers has acquired Walterry Insurance Brokers, an independent insurance agency based in Clinton, Maryland. The Walterry team joined Heffernan effective May 1, 2026.
Established in 1968, Walterry Insurance Brokers specializes in media liability, professional liability, and business insurance, serving newspapers, broadcasters, film and television producers, and nonprofit trade associations. The agency is a licensed in all 50 states.
Among its credits, Walterry designed a newspaper libel policy in 1978 which the National Newspaper Association became the first to buy. Soon after, 28 state and regional newspaper associations followed.
Walterry also provides commercial and personal insurance, life and health insurance, and other coverages.
The acquisition expands Heffernan’s presence in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and strengthens its capabilities in media liability and professional liability insurance.
Bill Coady, vice president of Walterry Insurance Brokers, said his agency will benefit from the additional capabilities and resources available through Heffernan.
Heffernan Insurance Brokers, founded in 1988, is one of the largest independent insurance brokerage firms in the country, ranking #23 on Insurance Journal’s Top 100 Independent Property/Casualty Agencies list. The firm is headquartered in Walnut Creek, Calif.
