Experts are predicting an active hurricane season (See IJ Website June 3), and as a result Newark CA-based Risk Management Solutions (RMS), a leading provider of products and services for the management of natural hazard risk, announced that it has expanded its online services for real-time hurricane monitoring and information.
The upgrade coincided with the official start of the 2002 Atlantic Hurricane season on June 1, with RMS noting that ” While U.S. insurers have not experienced a major landfalling hurricane in the last two years, forecasters’ predictions for an above-average number of tropical cyclones this year reinforce the importance of hurricane monitoring.”
“Recent seasons have been characterized by a persistent tendency for Atlantic hurricanes to recurve away from U.S. landfall due to a trough over the eastern part of the country,” commented Brian Owens, director of risk applications at RMS. “The big question this year will be to see if this East Coast trough reappears — or is absent, with a corresponding increase in hurricane landfalls.”
The expanded services are “designed to help insurers respond when a major storm threatens key population centers along the Eastern seaboard or Gulf of Mexico,” Owens stated. It features regular “CAT Updates,” e-mail notifications and a new “storm watch” feature “to track hurricane formation in the Atlantic and other basins worldwide.”
It also provides access to satellite images for active storm basins and details on individual storm formation and development. “For named storms, CAT Updates provides detailed reports with the latest forecasts of potential impacts, modeling parameters for simulating the storm in the RMS RiskLink® catastrophe modeling software, and damage reports for landfalling storms,” said the bulletin.
