Typhoon Mawar came ashore on Honshu, Japan’s main island, early Friday morning (local time) packing winds up to 95 mph (152 kph) and heavy rains that triggered flood warnings for the Tokyo region. At least two people have died in the storm.
Authorities have cancelled flights in and out of Tokyo, and have halted train and ferry services in the region. Chiba and Shizuoka prefectures, on the east and west of Tokyo, were the hardest hit. Thousands of households have been left without electricity.
Mawar is reportedly moving towards the northeast at around 15 mph (24 kph), and is expected to weaken as it moves over land. On this track it would move back into the Pacific by Friday night or Saturday morning.
