Guy Carpenter Names Powell to Head Latin America, Caribbean; Callahan to Manage Treaty Business

Guy Carpenter & Company, Inc., Marsh & McLennan’s global risk and reinsurance specialist, announced that Hugh Powell has assumed the role of CEO of its Latin America and Caribbean Region. He will manage Guy Carpenter’s operations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela and the Caribbean, as well as service operations in Miami.

The broker also announced that Don Callahan, President and CEO of Guy Carpenter Canada, has assumed responsibility for treaty business generated in its Latin America Caribbean Region. He will be working “closely with Mr. Powell to integrate the firm’s global facultative and treaty strategies in the region,” said the announcement.

“Hugh and Don bring a wealth of experience in the marketplace to the leadership of our operations in Latin America and the Caribbean,” stated Britt Newhouse, President and CEO of the firm’s operations in the Americas. “I am confident they will further establish Guy Carpenter’s strong presence throughout the region.”

The bulletin notes that Powell “was responsible for the start-up of Guy Carpenter’s offices in Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Prior to joining Guy Carpenter in 1997, he was Chairman of Willcox Argentina. He also held various positions at Johnson & Higgins Buenos Aires, New York and London since 1981.”

Callahan, who presently oversees all of Guy Carpenter’s operations in Canada, will take on new responsibilities in Latin America and the Caribbean. He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Sedgwick Re Canada, and has also held positions at Skandia Canada Re, Mercantile and General Re and the Royal Insurance Company.
