U.K. Telematics Insurer Finds Motorists 32% More Likely to Crash on Friday the 13th

September 13, 2019

Analysis of almost five billion miles of driving data and associated claims in the U.K. shows that Friday is the most likely day for motorists to have a road traffic incident, and when it falls on the 13th of the month, accident rates rise by 32%, according to latest analysis from telematics insurance provider, drive like a girl,

The risk of injury also increases, with 15% higher chance of an injury in a car accident on the 13th when it falls on a Friday, said the drive-like-a-girl analysis.

“Whatever day of the week, we urge drivers to take care. But it seems, from analysing our data, that Friday is a particularly risky day – and even more so when it falls on the 13th of the month,” said Kelly Wilkins, head of Customer Service, drive like a girl.

“The other risk factor for young and newly qualified drivers this Friday 13th is that as the season is changing they could be presented with much more challenging road conditions,” Wilkins said. “The seasonal shift brings shorter days, with low sun impacting visibility. And young, inexperienced drivers are particularly vulnerable as hazardous conditions will be a completely new experience.”

All drivers should take extra care “as we head into the autumn months – whether on Friday 13th or any other day,” Wilkins added.

The analysis did not include the reasons for the higher accident rates on Friday the 13th.

Drive like a girl uses individual driver data to determine the risk profile of each policyholder through a black box installed in the vehicle. It shares driving data with each customer through a personalized online portal, empowering them to manage their driving habits in order to reduce their insurance risk profile – and therefore their premiums. Policies offered by drive like a girl policies offer a fixed mileage of 7,000 miles of cover and reward points can be earned for driving safely.

In addition to drivelikeagirl, insurthebox are both brands of U.K. telematics firm Insure The Box Ltd., which is owned by Aioi Nissay Dowa Europe Ltd., part of the Japanese insurance group MS&AD Holdings. Insure The Box Ltd. launched in June 2010 with its first product, insurethebox, and now holds almost 5 billion miles of driving data and associated claims.
