The St. Paul Companies announced that Jay Fishman, chairman and CEO of Travelers Insurance Group Inc. and COO/finance and risk of Travelers’ parent, Citigroup Inc., has been named to succeed Douglas Leatherdale as chairman and CEO of The St. Paul.
Fishman, 48, has been with Citigroup and its predecessor companies since 1989. He was named CFO of Travelers Insurance Group in 1993 upon its acquisition by Primerica Corp., which later merged with Citicorp to become Citigroup. He became president and chief executive officer of Travelers in 1998 and chairman of the board in 2000.
The succession is the result of an intensive search by The St. Paul’s board of directors that commenced when Leatherdale, 64, indicated his intention to retire by age 65. He has been with The St. Paul since 1972, and has served as chairman and chief executive officer since 1990.
Leatherdale will remain on The St. Paul’s board of directors until May 2002.
