In an effort to decrease the number of uninsured drivers from the more than 1.1 million motorists without insurance, Gov. Jennifer Granholm will work with Michigan’s Secretary of State to upgrade the state’s computer tracking system.
Additionally, state Rep. Gary Woronchak, R-Dearborn, unveiled legislation that would double the fines uninsured motorists would have to pay for violations. Currently, anyone caught without insurance pays a fine of $200 to $500. Woronchak’s bill would increase the fine to $400 to $1,000.
