According to a recent study by State Farm, the Midwestern states top the country for number of auto collisions with deer.
The study, which covered the number of accidents involving deer between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005, indicates that the “Top Ten” states for accidents were:
1. Pennsylvania
2. Michigan
3. Illinois
4. Ohio
5. Georgia
6. Minnesota
7. Virginia
8. Indiana
9. Texas
10. Wisconsin
More than 1.5 million deer-auto collisions take place across the U.S. each year, according to State Farm. These accidents kill more than 150 drivers every year and result in more than $1.1 billion in vehicle damage.
A recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report revealed that vehicle-animal collisions rose 24 percent in 2000-2001 when compared with 1992-93 (NHTSA does not make distinctions on the type of animal).
