The governors and senators of North Dakota and Minnesota plan a meeting in Washington to promote permanent flood protection in the Red River basin.
North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven and Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said in a joint statement that the group will meet with top officials of the Army Corps of Engineers on May 5.
The North Dakota group will include Hoeven, Dorgan, Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., and Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker.
The Minnesota group will include Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., and Moorhead Mayor Mark Voxland.
The meeting is intended to promote planning and construction of a comprehensive flood-control project that would protect Fargo and Moorhead, Minn., the statement said.
