The federal government has declared 21 counties in southern Minnesota disaster areas, prompting Gov. Tim Pawlenty to convene a special session for Oct. 18.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says funds are available to local and state government and some nonprofit agencies struck by severe storms and flooding starting Sept. 22.
Preliminary estimates peg damage at $64 million. The aid is available for emergency work and the repair or replacement of damaged facilities. The agency is still considering aid to individuals.
The counties include Blue Earth, Cottonwood, Dodge, Faribault, Freeborn, Goodhue, Jackson, Lincoln, Lyon, Martin, Mower, Murray, Olmsted, Pipestone, Rice, Rock, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca, Watonwan and Winona.
The proposal lawmakers will consider is aimed at helping to rebuild roads but also includes loans to individuals and grants to small businesses.
