Federal officials say they intend to conduct their own review of Iowa’s health insurance rates because the state’s review of rates is insufficient.
The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa is one of 10 states whose reviews were deemed too weak.
State insurance commissioner Susan Voss is disputing the claim, calling it “craziness.” She says the state’s review procedures are the same as most of the states that were approved.
The dispute comes as health insurance rates continue to rise.
Iowa employers faced average cost increases of 13 percent last year with the biggest jumps seen by companies with 10 to 19 employees, which rose 17 percent.
State insurance division spokesman Tom Alger says the agency sees no need for the federal government to duplicate its review.
