The cities of South Bend, Elkhart and Fort Wayne each have been awarded grants worth $2.3 million to clean up lead from at-risk homes, train workers in lead safety methods and increase public awareness about childhood lead poisoning.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that severe exposures to lead can cause coma, convulsions and death, while lower levels can reduce intelligence, impair hearing and cause other problems.
Director Jon Gant of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control, says the grants show that providing healthy and safe homes is a priority.
South Bend plans to use the funds to clean up 350 housing units, while 300 will be cleaned up in Fort Wayne and 140 in Elkhart.
