The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services has issued a cease and desist order to an unlicensed auto insurance provider, Great Lakes Michigan Insurance Company, its owner and associated businesses.
The department’s order names the insurance company, Great Lakes Michigan Insurance Agency IV, www.greatlakesmich.com and James Hobson as respondents.
The DIFS alleges that the entities named in the order are not licensed to sell insurance in the state and that an investigation found that they have “offered, sold and negotiated automobile insurance” in Michigan.
The order states that at least two fraudulent certificates of insurance were issued to Michigan consumers. The consumers believed they were purchasing no fault auto insurance, but because the policies were fraudulent there was no actual coverage.
The insurance has been marketed and sold through the website www.greatlakesmich.com, as well as through the toll free telephone number (855) 643-0831, the telephone number (313) 778-3972, and the fax number (313) 581-5110, according to the DIFS order.
“The website, www.greatlakesmich.com, is owned and controlled by Respondent James Hobson,” the order states.
The order was dated Oct. 31; the respondents have 30 days in which to contest it.
