Indiana Township Gets Tornado Siren with Girl Scout’s Help

April 30, 2015

A small township east of Indianapolis has its first tornado siren thanks to the efforts of a Girl Scout.

WISH-TV reports the siren was installed April 28 in the Hancock County community of Green Township. The nearest siren had been located 10 miles away in Greenfield.

“This is a huge boost to the safety of all of the residents,” said Jennifer Titus, spokeswoman for Green Township Fire Department. “This is a void that we’ve had for many, many years.”

Girl Scout Katie Floyd says she saw the need for a siren in 2012 when a deadly tornado went through southern Indiana communities. She started fundraising for a siren for her community and got in contact with Illinois-based Federal Signal Corp., which knocked $17,000 off the cost of the siren.

“It’s a very moving thing that she did and we’re very proud of her,” said Matt Brady, vice president of Federal Signal Corp.

Floyd also got a $10,000 grant from a local company.

With Floyd leaving for college next year, she said she’s happy her hometown will be safer. She said she’d like more sirens to be installed.

“I hope that this will inspire others and bring in an awareness that there is still an issue out there,” she said.
