NAMIC Legislators of the Year from Indiana, Missouri

October 5, 2015

Missouri Rep. Don Gosen and Indiana Rep. Matt Lehman were named Legislators of the Year for the 2015 legislative session by the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies.

Gosen is chairman of the Missouri House Select Committee on Insurance, which oversees the House Property, Casualty, and Life Insurance Committee and the House Health Insurance Committee. During the past legislative session, he shepherded several insurance industry bills across the finish line. In addition to helping the insurance industry within Missouri, Gosen was instrumental in casting the deciding vote as a member of National Conference of Insurance Legislators on a litigation finance model bill that sets limits on the interest rates for so-called “lawsuit lending” firms.

Lehman, chairman of the Indiana House Insurance Committee, has been a consistent ally to the insurance industry, most recently shown by his sponsorship of House Bill 1278 that focused on transportation network companies. He exhibited flexibility in coordinating with NAMIC, carriers, and the state trade association to pivot to a national ride-sharing compromise negotiated by NAMIC and the property/casualty insurance industry along with the major transportation network companies. Lehman also demonstrates national leadership as chair of the P&C Committee at NCOIL. In this capacity he was instrumental in ensuring defeat of potentially dangerous lawsuit lending legislation.

The award is presented to one or more state legislators for their support of free-market principles and strong positions to improve the insurance market in their states.
