North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm is stepping down.
Hamm tells The Associated Press he will not seek re-election in 2016. Hamm says he has not decided what he will do in the future.
The 44-year-old Republican was appointed insurance commissioner in October 2007 by then-Gov. John Hoeven to finish the term of incumbent Republican Jim Poolman, who resigned.
Hamm is a former Cass County prosecutor. Just a year out of law school, he helped handle the 1999 murder case of a man convicted of killing an 11-year-old Fargo girl. The case received nationwide interest and helped prod North Dakota lawmakers to toughen state laws on tracking sex offenders.
