A National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report says a plane that crashed southwest of Chicago killing the pilot and setting a house on fire, left nearly a mile-long trail of debris before crashing.
The Piper PA30 piloted by 58-year-old Garry T. Bernardo of Lake Worth, Fla., took off from Florida, landed in Tennessee and was headed for Wisconsin when it crashed last week.
According to the NTSB, the fuselage, tail section, right engine, right wing and inboard section of the left wing were found at the main wreckage site. Part of the left wing, the left propeller cylinder, the left propeller and the left engine were found at various sites.
A cause of the crash hasn’t been determined. It could take the NTSB up to a year before the investigation is complete.
