The Ohio Department of Insurance is urging people to winterize their property and review insurance now in preparation for the state’s harsh winter weather.
Ways to winterize include:
- Clean debris from gutters and downspouts
- Address missing shingles and overhanging tree limbs
- Inspect the underside of the roof from the attic for signs of leaks
- Protect against frozen and burst water pipes by maintaining adequate heat in one’s home
- Insulate water pipes
ODI is asking policyholders to review protections and coverage amounts, evaluate personal possessions coverage options, review coverage for after-the-fact expenses and complete a home inventory.
Property policies generally cover structure and contents damage from wind, ice, water but usually exclude flooding, which typically requires the purchase of a separate flood insurance policy.
