June 28, 2005

The Insurance Marketing Communications Association (www.imcanet.com) on Tuesday awarded Donald Hurzeler its Golden Torch Award in recognition of his lifelong contributions to the insurance industry. The presentation was made during the IMCA’s 2005 Annual Meeting, held at the La Manson del Rio in San Antonio.

First presented in 1991, the IMCA’s Golden Torch Award recognizes an individual, group or organization that has “helped light the way for others” in the insurance industry by improving standards for communications excellence, speaking out convincingly on behalf of the insurance industry, showing a sense of responsibility to society and/or improving public understanding of insurance issues.

Hurzeler, chief marketing officer for Zurich’s Commercial Business Group in Schaumburg, Illinois, currently serves as president of the CPCU Society (2004-2005), a community of credentialed insurance professionals with more than 26,000 members. Last October, the Society published his book, “Designated for Success,” in which Hurzeler offers sound career advice gleaned from his more than 30 years of experience in the insurance industry.

During his career, Hurzeler has also served as CEO of a middle-market commercial lines company, president of an insurance brokerage, president of a company charitable foundation, and chief underwriting officer, as well as a director of numerous company boards.

“Don’s lifelong pursuit of helping others achieve their full potential as well as his dedication to inspiring a love of learning in others fully align with the award’s criteria,” said Fran P. Harding, award committee chairman and president of Mainsail Communications in Hampton, Virginia. “His considerable industry achievements are impressive. He joins an impressive list of industry leaders who have received this award.”

Previous Golden Torch winners include Nicholas J. Matthews, former senior vice president, National Association of Independent Insurance Agents; Edwin S. Overman, president emeritus of the American Institute for CPCU and Insurance Institute of America; Alfred Malecki, founder and publisher of Business Insurance magazine; Walter Gdowski, president of the Rough Notes Company; Kathryn J. McIntyre, former publisher of Business Insurance magazine and Mark Wells, Jr., publisher of the Insurance Journal.

The IMCA is an international organization of insurance communications professionals specializing in marketing, communications, advertising, sales promotion, public relations and media relations.
