I’m sure shoveling wheelbarrows full of cash to get a new CEO will surely solve those morale issues we’ve been reading about in various IJ articles that have been published recently.
Perhaps the BoD is employing a strategy of ‘rent-a-CEO’, using older or retired CEOs to implement very unwelcome, painful, but necessary changes to the dinosaur of the insurance industry? The BOD may be hoping their greying CEOs stay long enough to make needed changes, despite great pushback and bad morale among the rapidly thinning ranks.
BD is an actuary by profession, which may mean the BoD feels there is a need for someone who will turn his attention to the integrity of their balance sheets instead of other extraneous issues? Perhaps BD can convince stock analysts and regualtors that AIG is ‘viable’?
Worked for BD. He is stellar person and quality does not diminish with age. he did a fantastic job integrating CIGNA P&C into Ace. I can only think based on my actual experience that he will be an excellent leader and will surround himself with the up and comers.
Yes, his actuarial approach is excellent, but Brian is also about the people and if they stick around long enough to see this, they will stay as they will realize he is the real thing.

AIG, a bunch of thug morons throwing cash around like the Federal Government.
Another friend of Greenburg, ya that’ll turn things around!
AIG’s BoD has been ‘Duped’?!

Good old boys club. No one else in their right mind would take the job. Yea, a 70 year old. What does he care about morale and technology.
