Louisiana Agent Faces Fraud Charges

The Louisiana Insurance Department shut down the business of a Shreveport, La. insurance agent in the second such action by the department in as many days. According to Insurance Commissioner Robert Wooley, the agent was booked on charges of felony theft and misappropriation,

Janet Hart Musick, 48, was arrested at her present business address, 9051 Mansfield Road, Suite A-1, Shreveport, by the State Police Fraud Unit. She was booked into the Caddo Parish Prison for alleged felony theft in excess of $500 and misappropriation of insurance premiums.

Department of Insurance Fraud Unit investigators also served Musick with a cease and desist order and a summary suspension of her insurance licenses. The joint operation was part of an ongoing team effort of the Department of Insurance and State Police Fraud Units to eradicate agent (producer) fraud in the state of Louisiana.

The order alleges that Musick misappropriated funds and/or issued bogus written statements of insurance coverage on a dozen separate occasions. She is prohibited from engaging in any activity relating to the business of insurance.

Department records show that Musick first received a life and health license in 1986 and a property & casualty insurance license in 1992. Both licenses were current at the time of today’s shutdown and arrest.

Policyholders who have bought policies or conducted other insurance business, such as paying premiums, with Musick should call their insurance company to verify their coverage.
