Texas Workers’ Comp Conference to Focus on Continuing Reform

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) will host its 2007 Workers’ Compensation Conference on Sept. 19, at the Omni Austin Hotel at Southpark in Austin, Texas.

Joe Anderson, a veteran workers’ compensation attorney and senior partner with the Austin law firm of Burns Anderson Jury & Brenner, LLP, will be the conference keynote speaker. Anderson will discuss the workers’ compensation legislation passed during the 2007 legislative session and the impact the legislation will have on the Texas workers’ compensation system.

Other featured speakers include Robert Stokes of the law firm of Flahive Ogden & Latson, who will provide a regulatory update and Julie Shank, president of JShank Consulting, who will discuss the new medical benefits delivery paradigm. Shank’s remarks will be followed by a panel discussion.

Mark Hanna, ICT’s manager of public affairs and membership, will moderate a panel discussion in the morning on legislation passed during the 80th Texas Legislative session along with the ongoing efforts to reform the Texas workers’ compensation system.

Panelists include: State Representative Helen Giddings of Desoto, chair of the House Business & Industry Committee; State Representative Burt Solomons, author of HB 7, the workers’ compensation legislation passed during the regular session of the 79th Texas Legislature; Richard S. Geiger, ICT’s general counsel and an attorney with Thompson, Coe, Cousins & Irons; Cathy DeWitt, Government Affairs manager for the Texas Association of Business; Steve Norwood, M.D., a member of the Texas Medical Association and Texas Orthopedic Association; and Karl Amidon, senior vice president with Aon Re Inc.

The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation’s medical advisor, Dr. Howard L. Smith, will be the luncheon speaker and is expected to provide an overview of the on-going efforts of the state’s workers’ compensation regulatory agency to continue to implement the sweeping system reforms passed by the Texas Legislature during the 2005 legislative session.

The conference’s afternoon session will feature an overview of national workers’ compensation trends by David DePaolo, the editor-in-chief of WorkCompCentral and discussion of the state of the workers’ compensation line of insurance by Lori Lovgren of NCCI Holdings Inc.
