I don’t understand why the license has to be changed if Passports are available. People like me that never cross the border will be penalized by having to get this more expensive license for nothing.

You don’t think it is just going to be in the “swipe” code? All that means is there will be an additional field or fields stored with your Name, Address, License #, …

Because the Dept of Homeland Security is still pressing for that ‘National ID Card’. It looks like they might actually get the states to do the ‘enhanced driver’s licenses’ instead. Texas is looking to do it now, but Homeland Security is working with them to be sure that they are within approval specs for the national ID program in the future.
Right now some border states are pushing them for border crossing purposes, but they’re not just for border crossing. It’s also supposed to help with fake ID’s for hiring illegals. If you listen to Homeland Security Officials, they’re supposed to help weed out terrorist cells, prevent illegal hiring, prevent illegal border hopping, and possibly make coffee and biscuits in the morning. ;-)
Somehow, I’m just not sure they’ll live up to all the hype. But I can’t say it’s an all bad idea.

I can see it now. Leaving my home in a car with the license plate light out and being stopped by one of our many different law enforcement agencies and being asked to produce my papers. Just like any other third world country. We will no longer be able to travel in our own country without some government group tracking our every movement because ” the terrorists are coming, the terrorist are coming” or ” the illegals must be stopped”. Come on people! quit giving up our rights based on fear mongering radicals.

Jackson, are you the same person that said the government should stop cigarette production? You definitely send mixed messages.

BTW, exactly how am I giving up my rights by carrying an ID that clarifies my citizenship?

It’s not the fact that you’re carrying an ID that clarifies your citizenship which is indicative of you giving up your rights – it’s the fact that you would be forced to carry it in order to comply with the law. If carrying the ID is voluntary (and there is an alternative driver’s license which meets the legal requirement for operating a vehicle, but doesn’t include the additional personal information that the Real ID-compliant license would include), you could carry either one according to your preference. If the only way you could legally operate a vehicle would be to obtain a license which included a great deal more information than is currently required, then I agree with Jackson: we’re talking about a serious abrogation of rights.

    Macarvi, you have a point.

    However…

In my area of the country, New Orleans, we have a lot of illegals left over from Katrina. Crime from the illegals aren’t nearly as bad from the locals, but the feds are now watching our area for the drug wars, between the locals and the illegals. We do not have the problems that exist in other areas of the country, like Los Angeles maybe, but with this in mind, I kind of think carrying an identification might not be so bad. Most legals have them all the time anyway.

You don’t have a RIGHT to drive a vehicle. You have the privilege to drive if you want to and can obey the law. You don’t want to carry the legal documentation- don’t drive.

It’s supposed to also make it easier to track people who go to different states to obtain licenses after they lose on in the state their living in. And to be tracked if you’re picked up in Fla for DUI, but wanted for selling drugs in Tx. (which I can tell you right now does NOT happen)
I’m all for it. If you’ve never lost your license or been convicted and tried to run to a different state, what’s the problem?
Homeland has also promised it will help nationally track pedophiles, since for some reason the states keep releasing them. Instead of reporting where they live, they simply move to another state. This national ID program is ‘supposed’ to stop that.
Jessica Lundsford would be alive today if we had this years ago. The man who killed her was wanted in 3 states, but when he was picked up for DUI in Fla, nobody checked. With a national ID, they won’t have to ‘check’. The system will be a national one and it will automatically pull up outstanding warrants from other states.
I just hope it really works that way. I have doubts.

Considering all the money we are having to spend on illegal aliens, I’ll be happy to carry the new license if it gets rid of them.

I wonder how that will work with identity theft. Is it that difficult to alter a driver’s license? That is a question by the way. I have no idea if it is or not. Also, why not just put a microchip under the skin like they do on animals? Seriously, I am all for security and handling the illegal immigration problem but don’t y’all think we are going overboard?

Right now it’s WAY too easy to alter/produce driver’s licenses.
This new card is supposed to have some sort of chip in it that will prevent forgery.
And it will be national. Right now anyone wanted in any state just moves to a new state and most of the time goes on with their lives doing what it was that got them into trouble in the first place. This is supposed to stop that. A traffic ticket will alert the police if they’re wanted in other states. Or if they’re illegal. Or if they have a fake card.
I’m not sure what effect it will have on identity theft. The IRS won’t even tell you if someone is using your SS#.

Something has to be done if our government is going to back up their promise that the immigration issue is going to be addressed. Whether it is a fine, expulsion, deportation or a slap on the wrist – The only commonality we have in the US is a drivers license, and if that’s where it has to start…so be it. Those of us who drive (legally), will get one, those who drive without one will be hard pressed to produce a fake when you’re dealing with a database. One swipe through the computer and you know who you are dealing with – No racial profiling, no discrimination, no asking for “green cards” it’s everyone in the same boat (no not the one from Cuba…) This will also put our law enforcement personell in a better position to identify criminals, illegals, and less than desirable citizins. You can fake the photo, the address, the image and holographic seal on a drivers license, but you can’t enter the info into the governments computer.

Living in a border state – it is a joke to watch TV and see the number of drop houses they bust every month with 20-30-40 illegals hiding out waiting to break out into society.

AZ passed a law that business owners who “knowlingly hire” an illegal can lose their business license (after a fine process) People are up in arms because they say it is “unconstitutional” Give me a break – since when does the constitution protect harboring a criminal? There is no “religious persecution” “political asylum” for these people – they’re thugs and low lifes that cross the borders.

We deal with 25-30,000 caught each month in AZ – yes.. each month – and those are just the ones that are arrested – Imagine the strain on the legal system, the jail system and just our general economy. In January alone in just the general headlines you find reports in the paper all the time – Arizona Serial Rape Suspect (Illegal Alien) Arrested (the man way deported 3 times before!!!! Three illegal immigrants who police believe kidnapped and tortured a Phoenix resident in a human-smuggling case were arrested – Illegal alien runs down and kills 32 year old border agent trying to stop entry into US – 2 smugglers and 22 illegal immigrants arrested near Wickenburg

It has to start somewhere – and if it’s my drivers license or papers – I’m all for it.

I’m so tired of the bleeding hearts for these people – you run across the border and drop a baby – poof, your kid is a citizen… BS – The kid can come back when he’s 18 and apply – kick em all out and send them back home to come here legally – the path to citizenship starts at the end of the line… get in it.

AZ has several more initiatives that I’m planning on voting for – You don’t have papers – you can’t rent or buy property – you don’t have papers – don’t bother coming here to get married – go home – then try to come back across the border.

Get a grip folks – it isn’t going to magically fix itself – and we can’t purpetuate it any longer – grow up.

Jackson wrote that he is tired of hearing people saying “The terrorists are coming! The terrorists are coming!” * FACT: They are already here, many born here/US citizens; others illegally. Thanks to freedom for any religion in the USA, prisons are fertile grounds for militant Muslim converts, many of whom later undergo paramilitary training in camps around the US – again protected by law – waiting for the day/the signal/ the orders to do what? * A national ID card, though I don’t like it and expect some governmental abuses possibly, would help help tighten our security to prevent subversion as well as cut down on the deluge of illegal immigrants. * If this concerns you, please check out: ACT for America’s website – or the flash intro at usawakeup.org*
