The Arkansas Legislature has approved a bill allowing drivers to use their cellphones or other portable electronic devices to display proof of insurance.
By a 91-0 vote, House lawmakers passed a Senate-backed proposal that would permit drivers to show their proof of insurance cards on paper or electronically when registering their vehicle or during a traffic stop.
Using an electronic proof of insurance would not automatically give police permission to search a driver’s phone or electronic device without probable cause.
Democratic Sen. Larry Teague of Nashville and Republican Rep. Andrea Lea sponsored the measure.
The proposal now goes to Gov. Mike Beebe.
