The number of work-related fatalities in 2012 in Louisiana declined to 106, according to a preliminary count by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. This is down slightly from the revised figure of 111 deaths in 2011, and 111 deaths in 2010, the Louisiana Workforce Commission announced.
Industries reporting the most fatalities were trade, transportation and utilities, 35; construction, 23; natural resources and mining, 13; government, 11; and manufacturing, 9.
The LWC’s Office of Workers’ Compensation collects the data in partnership with the BLS. Additional state and national data is available at the BLS website Injuries, Illnesses and Fatalities section at bls.gov/iif.
The LWC administers the workers’ compensation system in Louisiana, and also provides free OSHA consultation for employers and provides valuable information on training, education and technical assistance at no cost.
