The Dallas City Council has agreed to pay $1.1 million to settle a lawsuit with a man who claimed he was unfairly beaten by a police officer and unjustly jailed for 15 months.
The Dallas Morning News reports the city council agreed to the settlement with Ronald Bernard Jones, who was arrested in 2009 and charged with aggravated assault of a public servant and cocaine possession after a police officer stopped him while he was walking.
But those charges were dismissed in 2011 after the prosecutor handling the case said it was “not triable.”
The dismissal launched an internal affairs investigation, which found no wrongdoing by any officers despite finding “inconsistencies between the video evidence” and the police report. The officer who initially stopped Jones resigned in 2012.
