The storms that rolled across the Denton area in north Texas in early April are estimated to have caused $300 million in insured losses. The area was hit by softball size hail and three tornadoes.
The thunderstorms erupted April 3 over Denton and moved eastward causing damage for nearly 100 miles.
The city of Denton was pelted by two separate storms causing widespread damage to automobiles, homes, businesses, the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University (TWU).
The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes in Collin, Hunt and Hopkins Counties.
The storm system spawned an EF-0 tornado in Farmersville where one minor injury was reported.
An EF-1 tornado caused five more injuries near the community of Merit. Another EF-1 tornado touched down near Birthright.
An EF-0 tornado has winds up to 85 mph, while an EF-1 tornado has winds up to 110 mph.
The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) estimated approximately 24,000 vehicles and 12,000 homes were damaged in the storm.
