AG Caldwell: No Texas Ebola Waste Disposal in Louisiana

November 3, 2014

Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell announced an agreement has been reached with Texas incinerator Veolia Environmental Services and Louisiana hazardous waste landfill Chemical Waste Management to ensure that incinerator ash associated with the recent Dallas Ebola virus occurrence will not be transported or disposed of in Louisiana.

On Oct. 13 the Louisiana Attorney General’s office obtained a restraining order in the 19th Judicial District Court to temporarily stop the transport of incinerated Ebola ash into Louisiana.

The temporary restraining order was extended on Oct. 21 at the request of all parties, before ultimately arriving at the Oct. 31 agreement. The agreement stipulates that Veolia and its affiliates must “provide a list of Texas licensed and permitted hazardous waste landfills authorized to dispose of the materials with whom VESNA and Veolia ES may also be under contract and to which the materials can be transported and contained in the State of Texas where the Ebola contaminated materials originated.”

Attorney General Buddy Caldwell said, “I am pleased today’s agreement ends this chapter in the controversy of the transportation and disposal of Ebola waste.”
