The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles has cleared more than 41,000 cases of drivers flagged for having lapsed insurance coverage, collecting about $6 million in fines.
That’s the latest data released by Col. Mike Edmonson, the state police superintendent who oversees the motor vehicles agency.
Edmonson says in nearly one-third — or 12,800 — of the resolved cases, drivers didn’t pay anything after showing they shouldn’t have been fined. Another 28,500 people paid for violating the state’s insurance coverage requirement.
The OMV received complaints after mailing 1.1 million collection letters to drivers. Some drivers said they were being improperly accused of lapsed insurance.
Edmonson said OMV added phone lines and lengthened hours to help people clear improper penalties.
