TDI: Former Texas Insurance Agent Who Faked Cancer Claims Sentenced

February 27, 2019

A Plano, Texas, woman pleaded guilty to insurance fraud for faking cancer claims to get more than $300,000 in insurance payments over two years, the Texas Department of Insurance announced.

Karissa White Coleman, a former licensed insurance agent, purchased books on how to code cancer claims. She then created fake medical records and submitted almost 100 claims for out-of-pocket expenses not covered by medical insurance.

Coleman was sentenced last week in a Collin County court to 10 years of probation and ordered to pay back $313,068. Her sentence also included 180 hours of community service.
