The death of a Louisiana nurse who was attacked by a mental health patient has prompted the medical community to demand better hospital safety practices.
News outlets report Baton Rouge General Medical Center nurse Lynne Truxillo suffered serious injuries in the attack early this month and finished her shift before undergoing a medical exam.
She suffered several scratches and a torn ACL. She died days later from a blood clot that traveled to her lungs — something that the East Baton Rouge coroner ruled was directly caused by her injuries.
The man accused in the attack, 54-year-old Jessie Guillory, was arrested last week and charged with manslaughter.
The medical community is calling for more mental health care funding, staffing, security and better violence prevention plans, among other changes.
