A small town Georgia hospital destroyed by a tornado a little more than a year ago is ready to open its doors again.
Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus, Ga., will offer the full gamut of hospital services – from surgical to inpatient – in a 76-bed facility starting today.
The hospital has been providing only urgent care out of tents and modular buildings since the March 1st, 2007, tornado that tore through Americus.
Officials expect to break ground in October on a permanent replacement hospital to be opened in 2010.
The storm was part of a series of tornadoes that swept across the state, killing nine people in Sumter, Taylor and Baker counties, and causing more than $210 million in damage.
