North Carolina County to Buy Flood-Damaged Homes

Mecklenburg County in North Carolina plans to buy more than a dozen homes damaged by flooding last month.

County commissioners saidthey plan to spend up to $2 million as part of an effort to remove homes located in flood-prone areas.

Storms on Aug. 5 damaged more than 160 buildings in the city.

The purchase endorsed this week will affect between 16 and 20 homes. Officials say about half of those homeowners did not have flood insurance.

Final approval by the county commission could come later this month.

County officials plan to begin making offers on the homes as early as next week.
