Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. has suspended three fraternities after administrators received hazing complaints.
Coastal spokeswoman Martha Hunn told local reporters the chapters of Kappa Sigma, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Pi Kappa Phi have been placed on suspension while officials investigate allegations of “questionable” new member activities.
Hunn said the school is working with the national organizations of the fraternities to complete the investigations.
“In order to continue investigating, it’s really important to stop the activities with those organizations,” she said
University officials would not say specifically what prompted the suspensions. Hunn said some allegations came from an anonymous hazing report form on the school’s website.
Hunn said no reports had been filed with campus police. Conway and Horry County police also said they have not received any complaints.
Vice President for Student Affairs Debbie Conner said some concerns came from students who contacted the administration.
“We’re not sharing any of the details,” Conner said. “We’re still in the process of interviewing individuals, but the reports are very different and they range in degrees of concern for us.”
Coastal kicked two fraternities off campus last year for hazing.
