South Carolina Lawmakers to Debate Uber Bill in Special Session

Debate on a bill allowing Uber to continue operating in South Carolina will extend into the Legislature’s special session.

The House refused June 5 by a vote of 81-23 to accept the Senate’s changes to the bill. That allows for work to continue when the Legislature reconvenes June 16 for three days.

A six-member committee of House and Senate members will try to hash out differences in the two versions.

GOP Rep. Jim Merrill of Charleston says he fears it will be impossible to pass a compromise in time to keep Uber’s ride-sharing services available for residents and tourists. The company’s temporary license expires June 30.

If the House had agreed to the Senate’s version, the bill would have gone to Gov. Nikki Haley.
