North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory says flooding caused at least $31 million in damage in eight North Carolina counties where he’s now seeking a federal disaster declaration in hopes of getting help paying that bill.
McCrory said Friday he has asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the declaration for Brunswick, Carteret, Dare, Hyde, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico and Pender counties. Officials say FEMA typically pays the majority of costs if it agrees to the declaration.
McCrory says assessment teams found the majority of the money, $23 million, is needed to repair beaches and other recreational facilities.
From Sept. 25 to Oct. 5, between 7 inches and 9 inches of rain fell in North Carolina’s coastal plain and southern border counties. Some areas reported higher rainfall totals, including 22 inches in Calabash.
