A South Carolina lawmaker is proposing that the state set up an online database where violations, arrests and investigations linked to fraternity and sorority activities at the state’s public colleges can be listed.
The Anderson Independent Mail reports the legislation is being proposed by state Rep. Joshua Putnam, a Piedmont Republican.
Putnam says the database would make it safer for college students and parents could be made aware of the database before their children pledge for Greek organizations.
Putnam says he is proposing the bill after meeting with the parents of Tucker Hipps, a Clemson University fraternity pledge who died in September of 2014 during a pledge run.
No criminal charges have been filed in the case but Hipps’ parents have filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
