First Major Snowfall in West Virginia Blamed for Dozens of Wrecks

West Virginia’s first significant snowfall this year is to blame for dozens of highway wrecks.

There were no reports of deaths, but slick roads Friday night left many drivers and their passengers injured.

In Kanawha County, more than three dozen accidents were reported, according to media outlets.

One of the worst was a seven-vehicle wreck near Dunbar in the westbound lane of Interstate 64. The mess prompted a closure of a section of the highway until nearly midnight.

In the Morgantown area, more than 20 accidents were reported as highway surfaces froze over.

In the Parkersburg area, bridges linking West Virginia and Ohio were closed amid snow squalls. They have reopened. Dozens of vehicles had been stuck on the spans.
