The number of people who died in moped accidents in South Carolina increased 57 percent in 2015 from the year before, leading a legislative supporter of laws for the vehicles to reissue his call for tighter safety.
The Greenville News reported that the Office of Highway Safety says 55 people died in moped accidents in the state in 2014, compared to 35 in 2014.
Republican Rep. Joseph Daning recently helped push a moped safety bill through the state House. The measure classifies mopeds as motor vehicles, requiring registration, insurance, operator’s licenses and for drivers to follow all traffic laws.
The bill would also prohibit a driver from operating a moped if they had their driver’s license suspended or revoked.
Daning says he hopes the Senate will pass the bill.
