Forecasters say a tornado that severely damaged homes and trees in a Birmingham, Ala., suburb has been determined as an EF2, with winds of between 120 and 125 mph.
National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Holmes told The Associated Press that survey teams are still evaluating damage in the McCalla area where the tornado struck Tuesday. Officials have said storm damage was concentrated in southern Jefferson and northern Shelby counties.
Authorities have said four people were injured in the tornado. Jefferson County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Randy Christian has described the injuries as minor. Christian says 12 homes sustained major damage.
Jefferson County Emergency Management Director Jim Coker told Al.com two of the injured were taken to hospitals, and two others were treated at the scene.
