The National Weather Service confirms six tornadoes hit Mississippi on Saturday.
Tornadoes were reported in Lafayette, Lamar, Lauderdale, Rankin and Winston counties. Surveyors say damage in Lowndes County was caused by a thunderstorm.
The Lauderdale storm stretched for 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometers) with top winds estimated at 115 mph (185 kph), rating EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reports major damage to 45 homes, 14 apartments and four public buildings in Lauderdale County, while minor damage was recorded to 72 homes, 15 businesses and eight public buildings. One person was injured and more than 60 residents were displaced.
No injuries were reported in other tornadoes. Back-to-back twisters were recorded in Lafayette County, with top winds of the strongest estimated at 90 mph (144.83 kph).
