Speed limits have been reduced along a stretch of Interstate 77 in southern West Virginia where 12 motorists have died since 2016.
The state Division of Highways lowered the speed limit last month along I-77 in Mercer County from 70 mph to 60 mph (97 kph). News outlets report flashing warning lights and traffic message boards also have been installed and state police are increasing area patrols.
The six-mile stretch from Camp Creek to Flat Top includes a steep hill and sharp curve. Many of the fatalities involved tractor-trailers. In April 2017, a family of four from North Carolina was killed when a tractor-trailer crossed the median and slammed into their SUV along I-77.
West Virginia Parkways Authority General Manager Greg Barr says other safety measures are being considered, including improvements to the median.
